test of mvar - true if the mvar contains:

mvar / bit                the given response

mvar / bit1..bit2        any response in the range given (inclusive)

mvar / B                blank (no responses)

mvar / S                one (and only one) response

mvar / M                more than one response

mvar / Cn                exactly n responses

mvar / ivar                the response pointed to by the ivar
