A Tables Stage contains instructions to read data from the .IDF and increment tables, which are normally cross-tabulations of variables. The incremented table values are held in an Intermediate Tables File (.ITF).

It is possible to define new variables (from the variables defined in the data stage) if it is necessary to tabulate the data in a different form from that originally envisaged. Any "new" variables are only available during the stage where they are defined.
