Most variables may have texts assigned to them, to be used when the variable is tabulated. The rules are as follows:

Cols, fields, spreadfields, colbins and cvars may not have any text assigned to them (since they cannot be tabulated).

All other types of variable may have up to four titles:

VT vertical title

HT horizontal title

BT base title

FT footnote title

For svars and mvars, these normally appear in the title of tables where the variable is used.

They may also have up to three labels:

V stub, or vertical label

H banner, or horizontal label

FL filter label

These normally appear down the side or across the top of tables where the variable is used.

Each of these texts may be assigned globally or to an individual variable.
