IFF is a numeric format. The standard setting is IFFU.

The value U is a special value (it is actually -12345) which is recognised by CL as an undefined value.

This format sets the value to be used when a field is in some way invalid.

Fields are invalid if they contain embedded or trailing blanks, decimal points (unless format ADF is set), negative values (unless format ANF is set), leading blanks unless ABF is set) or any other character other than 0-9.
