A code list is a list of responses which are used to "code" verbatim question answers.
The code list is usually built from a large sample of the verbatim answers. Extra responses may need to be added as coding proceeds.
Each verbatim text is then examined and allocated to one or more of the code list responses.
Once the code list is finalised, it is used to create responses to a (usually) multi-coded question which will be used to hold the coded answers.
The coded response numbers can be put in the "Value" column in the Verbatim file and this file can then be merged with the main data file.
