Summary table

Sometimes there is a requirement to put a particular row or rows from a number of different tables together into one summary table.

Format CON (continuation)

A table can be placed immediately underneath the previous table using format option CON.  The tables must have the same number of columns as each other.

The total row shown and used for percentages on both tables will be the total row from the first table.

Format NDIS (no distribution)

A table with format NDIS will not show the normal rows of the table.  It will only show any statistics rows, normally just the mean score.  This can be a table with values (integer or double) as the rows or a normal table with score values assigned to the rows.

Total row only table

Sometimes the tables to be shown need to have a separate total row which is relevant for all the tables.

The first table can therefore just be a total row (which means it has no row entry) with the relevant entry as the columns.

Mean score labels on summary tables

Normally the text against a mean score is set by the CL special text %AVG, default "Mean score".

If "Averages use question text" is set in Project global settings and format NDIS is used, the label for the mean scores will be the entry title instead of the text set with %AVG.

If this setting is not used then you will need to place a %AVG setting before each table to set the label for the mean score and reset it after the last table in the summary, see CL special texts

Mean score summary table

Using the above you can build a mean score summary table by repeating the set of tables but adding format NDIS to all the tables and format CON to all but the first.

If the original tables have different total rows then you should have a total row only table as the first table with the columns you want to show, or use format NPTR/NUNR on the first table to suppress the total row.

Other summary tables

Summary tables using selected rows can be done in a number of ways:

Suppress unwanted rows

You can copy the entries used as the rows to variables and set "Suppress always" on the rows you do not want to see in the summary table.  Use format CON and a total row only table as above.

Create variables with the required rows

You can copy the entries used as the rows to variables and delete the rows you do not want to see.  Use format CON and a total row only table as above.

Create a combined variable with all the rows you need

Assuming the total rows are the same for all tables, create a new variable with only the rows you want from all the row entries into a single variable and use this as the rows.  You only then need one table for the summary.

Create a combined variable with all the bases and rows you need

If the total rows are different in the original tables then you can create a new variable with only the rows you want but before each one add a row to be used as the base for the row(s) following.  These total rows need to be marked as "Base for following" and can be shown or you can "Suppress always".

Further complications

Any normal tables can use format CON to show immediately below provided the number of columns is consistent.  This includes overlaid tables, grid tables and banked tables.

For an output table with a number of individual table definitions (overlaid or banked), only the first in each should use format CON.
