Input data introduction

Companion

The term "Input data" is used for entering the answers to questionnaires or other paper documents, or during a CAPI (computer assisted personal interview), see Reference manual Input data window.

An Input file (qpsmrinp) should be used for data entry of new records from paper documents or for CAPI interviews. The data collected will be stored in a Data file.

For how to make an Input file and for options available when inputting data, see Make input file.

Skeleton projects are available at netmr-download.scot/home/downloads  that include all the ZZZ entries needed for surveys. These can be copied and modified as required.

The Input windows are used when an Input file (qpsmrinp) is opened.

When using a central data file any number of users can input and update the data file at the same.

Access to records is controlled by a Data index file.

There are various reasons for using input data:

Testing the full questionnaire for interviewer training or customer checking before entering live data

Entering new records (questionnaires)

Updating and verifying existing records

Changing the serial number on records

Deleting records

Input modes

Input paper mode

CAPI (Windows or Android)

Telephone (using QPSMR Telin)

CATI, including sample and quota (using QPSMR Telin)

The Android version will upload collected data to an FTP site.  This data can downloaded and combined using the main menu [Answers]  [Download...] options.

The way data is entered and the order of the questions will depend on the mode.

Questions that are filtered (not applicable for this respondent) and ZZZ questions are not normally shown in data input.

Questions without answers (Text for interviewer question) are not shown for paper input.

Options

Using the Pause button you can:

See working entries  (variables, filters and ZZZ entries) as well as the questions to be answered

Review all the data for the current record so far

Abort the input before completing

A list of entries can be displayed on the main window.

You can use the return key to continue with the next unanswered question.

Testing a questionnaire

Testing input can be done directly from the Main window menu [Answers] [Test input data] and [Selected entries test].

For a "selected entries test" only the selected entries, and any preceding entries which those selected depend upon, will be shown.

Data view

Data can also be changed from the Main window menu [Data] [View data] but this can only be done when nobody else is using the file.

To update a record you can double-click a data cell of that record in Data view.  You will need to set "Updating allowed" before this will work.
